Vocabulary Building Using ICT in ESL

In May 2018, the MEES launched an action plan for digital technology in education and higher education. To support the development of digital competencies, online courses on a platform called Campus RÉCIT were developed and launched in September 2018.

One of these courses, vocabulary building using ICT in English as a second language,is intended to support ESL teachers, at the elementary and secondary level, in the integration of technology for vocabulary building with their students.

Throughout the course, teachers will experiment with different tools that could be integrated in 5 different types of classroom activities that can help build students’ vocabulary. They are:

  • using lists or flashcards
  • using visuals
  • using dictionaries
  • using games
  • using semantic mapping and word webs

Through different types of tasks, teachers reflect on their own practice, learn about these types of classroom activities and the web tools we suggest for each of them. Then, they challenge themselves to use some in class with their students.

Teachers can go at their own pace and choose what works best for them in their pedagogy. All of the tools presented can be used on all devices and are at low or no cost to users and are applicable to many themes used in class. We also chose tools that are simple to use both for the teacher and the student.

At the end of the course, teachers will be ready to integrate new tools in class.

On the Campus RÉCIT platform, you can find other very interesting online courses on the use of iPads, Chromebooks, and many robots that we have received in our schools.
